Cold water swimming: how to acclimatise safely

How to acclimatise to cold water safely: what cold water shock is, how long adaptation takes, getting in, and warming up after.

Cold water does two things at once: it rewards you and it can kill you. Acclimatising is how you tip that balance — teaching your body to meet the cold calmly so the first minute in the water is boring, not dangerous. It takes weeks, not one brave plunge.

The short version

  • Acclimatise gradually — short, regular dips over 4–6 weeks, never one big cold jump.

What is cold water shock, and why does it matter?

The danger in cold water is not usually hypothermia — that takes time. It is the first minute. Sudden immersion below roughly 15°C (59°F) triggers an involuntary gasp followed by rapid, uncontrollable breathing and a spike in heart rate. That is cold water shock. If your face is under when you gasp, you inhale water; if you panic, you thrash and tire.

The RNLI is blunt about this: cold water shock, not distance or fitness, is what catches most people out. Their advice for anyone who gets into trouble is to float on your back until the gasp reflex settles — the "Float to Live" message — because the response peaks and fades within about 90 seconds. Acclimatising is simply training your body so that spike is smaller every time.

How long does it take to acclimatise to cold water?

There is no shortcut, and that is the point. Research on repeated cold immersion shows the gasp and breathing response measurably blunts after roughly four to six sessions spread over a few weeks. You are not getting fitter; you are dampening a reflex.

Build it in stages rather than dates:

1. Start before it is truly cold

The easiest time to begin is late summer or early autumn, when water sits around 15–18°C (59–64°F). Ride the temperature down as the season turns and your body adapts alongside it.

2. Keep sessions short and frequent

Little and often beats long and rare. Two or three short dips a week does more than one heroic swim a fortnight. Early on, a few minutes in the water is plenty — you are collecting exposures, not distance.

3. Never chase the cold

If you miss a couple of weeks, step back a level. Acclimatisation fades when you stop, so treat a gap as a reset, not a setback.

You are not toughening up. You are teaching a reflex to stay quiet — and a quiet reflex is one you build slowly and keep topped up.

What is the safest way to get in?

Slowly, and breathing the whole time. Walk in to your waist, splash cold water on your neck and face, and let your breathing settle before you go deeper. The neck and chest trigger the strongest shock response, so give them a moment to register the cold before you commit.

Keep your first strokes calm and your head up. Do not put your face straight into cold water on entry — that stacks the gasp reflex on top of the immersion. Once your breathing is steady and even, then lower in and swim. If the breathing will not settle, stand or float until it does. There is no version of this where fighting it wins.

Why is getting out the dangerous part?

Most people brace for the cold going in and forget the exit. When you leave the water, cold blood from your arms and legs keeps circulating inward and your core temperature can keep falling for 10 to 20 minutes — the "afterdrop". This is why swimmers sometimes feel fine at the water's edge and shivering-cold in the car park.

Get out before you are cold, not when you already are. Then warm up slowly:

Rewarming, in order

  • Dry off fast and get layers on immediately — hat, gloves, a warm base layer.
  • Add a windproof jacket. Wind chill on wet skin undoes everything.
  • Sip something warm and eat. Skip the hot shower at first — sudden heat on cold skin can drop your blood pressure and make you faint.
  • Move gently. Walk, don't sprint.

How cold is too cold to acclimatise safely?

Below about 10°C (50°F), everything narrows — your safe time in the water, your ability to swim, your margin for error. Experienced winter swimmers often measure sessions in minutes, roughly one minute per degree Celsius as a rough ceiling, and always with people on the bank. If you are new, treat single-digit water (Celsius) as a place you visit briefly, not somewhere you train.

Two firm rules hold at every temperature. First, never do this alone: acclimatisation is exactly when your body is learning to handle something that can incapacitate you fast, so have eyes on you. The US-based American Red Cross puts constant supervision at the centre of all cold-water safety guidance for the same reason. Second, be visible — a brightly coloured buoy and a bright cap make you findable in grey water and low winter sun.

A note on safety. Acclimatising lowers your cold water shock response; it does not remove it, and it does nothing for currents, depth or getting out.
